Marc R. Mayberg, M.D., is Chief Medical Director of the Swedish Neuroscience Institute. Dr. Mayberg was previously chairman of the department of neurological surgery at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, one of the largest and most well-respected academic neurosurgical programs in the United States. Prior to joining The Cleveland Clinic in 1998, Dr. Mayberg was a professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Board-certified in neurological surgery, Dr. Mayberg’s clinical interests include microsurgery and stereotactic radiosurgery for cerebrovascular diseases such as aneurysm, stroke and stroke-related conditions and skull-base tumors.
The author of more than 200 scientific papers and book chapters and two textbooks, Dr. Mayberg is on the editorial boards for numerous peer-reviewed journals including Stroke, Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurovascular Disease, Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease and Journal of Surgical Research. He is co-editor of Neurosurgery Clinics of North America.
Dr. Mayberg is an active member and holds leadership positions in many professional organizations, including the American Board of Neurological Surgery, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Neurosurgical Society of America, American Academy of Neurological Surgery and Society of Neurological Surgeons. He was previously president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is currently the chairman of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association. He serves as treasurer of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Mayberg was a founding member of the Brain Attack Coalition and instrumental in the development of guidelines for the certification of primary stroke centers. Dr. Mayberg has been active in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Veterans Administration Research Council, the National Stroke Association, the American Heart Association and the Acoustic Neuroma Association. He has been principal investigator for many clinical trials and holds many NIH grants, including his current NIH-funded research on the blood-brain barrier. Dr. Mayberg holds several patents related to drug delivery to the brain and vessel walls.
He is a graduate of Harvard University and the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and was a fellow at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London.
