Rayburn S. Lewis, M.D.
Senior Vice President and COO of Swedish/Cherry Hill
Rayburn Lewis, M.D., is a board-certified internal medicine physician who serves as Senior Vice President and COO of Swedish/Cherry Hill.
In his previous role, Dr. Lewis had overall responsibility for the Ballard campus, as the executive director. He assembled a strong leadership team to implement an ambitious agenda of clinical activity, growth and campus redevelopment, including recruitment of additional physicians to the Ballard community. This culminated in a 2011 financial performance that far exceeded budgeted goals.
Dr. Lewis has been a member of Swedish's medical staff since 1984.
Prior to Ballard, Dr. Lewis was executive director of the Medicine and Behavioral Health service groups at Swedish. He was medical director for the Cherry Hill Campus from 1995 to 2002, and was Swedish's Vice President for Medical Affairs from 2002 to 2007. He also served as medical director of the Mother Joseph Clinic at Swedish/Cherry Hill, which provided specialty physician services to uninsured and underinsured patients. Dr. Lewis was a member of the Minor & James Medical Group from 1987 to 1996, practicing internal and sports medicine, and maintained a small but active practice at the Swedish Family Medicine/Cherry Hill Campus residency clinic till 2008.
He attended Purdue University and the University of Michigan for undergraduate school and obtained his medical degree from the University of Washington (U.W.). He did his internship and residency at the U.W. School of Medicine's Department of Medicine. Dr. Lewis' management education experience includes certification through the VHA Physician Leadership Program (College of William and Mary).
Over the years, Dr. Lewis has received several honors and awards, including the Col. William Hall Award for Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare from the African American Community Health Network, the Dr. Blanche Lavizzo Spirit of Caring Award from the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic, the Alpha Phi Alpha Zeta Pi Lambda Chapter Meritorious Community Service Award, and the Seattle Human Services Coalition's annual Human Services Mayoral Award for providing strong leadership and advocacy for King County's underserved, uninsured and low-income residents. In May 2008, Dr. Lewis was honored by Black Enterprise magazine as a 'Leading American Doctor' for epitomizing the core values of education, achievement, honesty and integrity.
Dr. Lewis is a member of the King County Medical Society and the American College of Physician Executives. He is a past trustee of the Washington State Medical Association and the Washington State Association of Black Professionals in Health Care. He is a past member of the Puget Sound Blood Center's volunteer Board of Trustees, and a current board member of the Cascade Bicycle Club (CBC), and Seattle Vocational Institute advisory council. He has been active in youth fitness for more than 25 years, including involvement with Seattle Urban 4H and the CBC Major Taylor Project, and serving as a volunteer physician for the Franklin High School sports program.
