Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells – the special white blood cells that are part of the body’s immune system and produce antibodies to fight infections. Patients with multiple myeloma have increased numbers of abnormal plasma cells that infiltrate the bone marrow and may cause decreased bone marrow blood cell production, fragile bones, pain, abnormal kidney function and decreased quantities of normal antibodies.
