Pain Specialists
The Swedish/Edmonds pain treatment program is led by pain specialists, Dr. Adam Balkany and Dr. John Baumeister.
Dr. Balkany is an anesthesiologist and interventional pain specialist, fellowship trained at the University of Washington’s Pain Management Program. Partnering with patients and physicians, Dr. Balkany develops individualized treatment plans to relieve, reduce or manage pain and improve a patient’s overall quality of life. Treatment plans may include interventional procedures, medications and non-drug therapies.
“Pain is your body's way of letting you know something is wrong,” says Dr. Balkany. “Fortunately, there are many treatments available to help patients who are experiencing pain improve their quality of life.”
Dr. Baumeister is certified by the American Academy of Pain Management and has specialized in the treatment of chronic pain since 1997. His background, which includes six years in emergency medicine and in family practice, gives him a broad knowledge base with which to approach and treat chronic pain patients.
Dr. Baumeister’s mission is to understand each of his patients as a whole, to work with them for solutions and to inspire hope.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures
Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed by Drs. Balkany and Baumeister to relieve pain include osteopathic manipulation or movement of a patient’s muscles through stretching, gentle pressure and resistance to ease pain, promote healing and increase mobility. Dr. Balkany also performs epidural injections of anti-inflammatory medicine and cortisone injections to relieve joint and back pain, as well as trigger point injections (dry needling) to relieve pain in muscles and connective tissue. Dry needling requires highly specialized training and may also be used to treat headaches, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, muscle spasms, hip pain, knee pain and repetitive strain injuries.
Pain treatment procedures are performed in the minor procedures area of the hospital’s surgery department. If you are in need of pain relief, consult your physician for a referral.
This clinic is licensed as part of the hospital, and a patient may receive a separate facility charge. Read more here.
