Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
As one of the most active programs on the West Coast, Swedish Neuroscience Institute is a leader in DBS treatment in Seattle and the Northwest. We pride ourselves on our compassionate, patient-focused approach and our ability to treat the whole patient, not just the condition.
At Swedish, neurologists who specialize in movement disorders and neurosurgeons with expertise in DBS work together to empower patients who are seeking relief from various types of movement disorders, including:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Essential tremor
- Dystonia
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Swedish movement disorder experts have determined that DBS combined with medication therapy gives many patients the best chance of significantly reducing disease symptoms. During their six-month follow-up, 100% of Swedish's DBS patients reported:
- Symptom improvement
- Improved quality of life
- Increased independence
Once your doctor determines that you are a good candidate for DBS, our scheduler will contact you to settle on the best time for your procedure.
DBS requires implanting a tiny device in the brain and connecting it to a pulse generator beneath the skin of the chest. The multistep procedure is completed over about 10 to 16 weeks.
- Step 1. Surgery to implant the lead(s)
- Step 2. Surgery to implant the batteries
- Step 3. Programming the battery
- Step 4. Follow-up adjustments and evaluations to provide the greatest relief with the fewest symptoms.
DBS treatment does not destroy brain tissue, and the entire system can be removed if an alternative treatment becomes available.
