Policies

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) requires that hospitals post select policies related to access to care to our website.

Swedish provides quality, compassionate health care to everyone that we serve. Based on our Mission to provide care to all and our core values of compassion, excellence, integrity, justice, dignity and safety, all patients and visitors who are receiving care, services or support from Swedish are treated with respect and equality. Each interaction will be free from discrimination based on age, race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, national origin, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, veteran or military status, or any other basis prohibited by federal, state or local law.

Below are copies of the policies that Swedish has in place at this time that are relevant to the DOH’s request. Also below is our statement regarding reproductive health care.

Swedish recognizes that patients and their family members and friends may want to document care experiences while at Swedish. In order to make recordings at Swedish, recording activity must at all times adhere to the following requirements:

  • Swedish staff obtain written consent to record or photograph patients in the clinical setting, typically to support a diagnosis, care planning or for research purposes. Each consent is specific to the request (for example, progression of wound healing). These photographic, video or audio recordings are performed and stored on secure devices connected to our electronic medical record. Recordings may not be conducted if the patient does not provide written consent.
  • Patients and visitors must seek verbal permission before recording hospital caregivers or medical staff members. Every Swedish staff member (including physicians, nurses and volunteers) who may be recorded must consent and grant permission to being recorded. Recordings may not be conducted if any Swedish staff does not provide consent/permission.
  • Recording equipment (photography and the use of audio/video recording technology including cellphones) may be prohibited in some areas of the facility and premises. In such areas, signage is posted.
  • Recordings must at all times respect the privacy of patients and staff, not disrupt care or operations, and not interfere with the safety of patients, family members, visitors or staff. Individuals who violate the recording policy may be asked to hand over or destroy the recording, including any postings of the recording that have been shared. Swedish has the right to request and retain a copy of any recording made within the facility.
  • Swedish will not be responsible for loss or damage to any recording equipment.

Recordings for obstetrics purposes is covered by a different policy. For more information, see audio and video recording in the delivery room.

Swedish is dedicated to maintaining excellence and integrity in our operations and professional business conduct. Swedish promotes an organizational culture that supports ethical conduct and a commitment to comply with all governing laws and regulations not only in the delivery of our health care, insurance and education services, but in our dealings with our workforce members, physicians, faculty, agents, payers and the communities in which we operate.

The Audit and Compliance Committee of the Providence Board of Directors approved and updated the Integrity and Compliance Program Description in 2019. The Providence Compliance Program (Program) applies to all Providence ministries including our hospitals, clinics, senior and community service entities, university, high school and others. The Program also applies to Providence’s wholly owned or controlled entities commonly known as Affiliates, including: Swedish Health Services; Swedish Edmonds; Kadlec Health System; Pacific Medical Centers; and other organizations that may join Providence as an Affiliate unless specifically noted otherwise. Providence and its Affiliates are collectively referred to as "Providence" in all compliance related materials.

The Program Description is a high level summary of steps Providence implemented to incorporate recommended compliance program guidance from the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. Our Program serves as the foundation for our commitment to an ethical organizational culture and compliance with laws and regulations.

Our Program provides support to our health care, insurance and educational operations through a collaborative partnership with those we serve. This program is intended to provide reasonable assurance that Swedish:

  • Establishes, monitors, and supports high professional and ethical standards
  • Supports initial and continuing compliance education and training
  • Complies in all material respects with federal, state and local laws and regulations that are applicable in our operations
  • Maintains a mechanism (through the Integrity Hotline at 888-294-8455) for reporting integrity, compliance or legal concerns
  • Satisfies the conditions of participation in health care programs funded by the federal and state governments
  • Promotes self-monitoring and provides for, in appropriate circumstances, voluntary disclosure of violations of laws and regulations
  • Reviews, investigates, and acts on allegations of violations and misconduct

Our mission, vision, values, and promise provide guidance and inspiration as we deliver quality care, make sound, ethical choices, and meet our organizational goals. As workforce members, we are accountable for the integrity of our decisions and actions on the job. The Code of Conduct provides a foundation of expectations for us as we do our work each day.
