For young people interested in volunteering at Swedish Edmonds campus, we have our junior volunteer program. As a junior volunteer, you will be able to assist in the support and comfort of patients at the hospital, as well as learn about and experience career possibilities in the health-care field. In addition to the experiences you will gain, you will also be able to meet new people and make new friends. If your school has a community service requirement, the junior volunteer program at Swedish Edmonds can help you fulfill that.
Participants in our junior volunteer program (depending on age) have the opportunity to work at places like Rehab, Information Desk, Patient Care Areas, Food Service, and Companionship Care Program.
To qualify volunteers must be at least 14 years old and able to commit to at least one 3 or 4-hour shift each week. Once prospective volunteers complete the required paperwork they will be asked to participate in an interview with the volunteer services staff.
If you are interested in becoming a junior volunteer, download and complete the junior application and return it to the volunteer office.
If you have questions, call the Volunteer Services office at 425-640-4341, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
It's a well-known fact that animals can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and promote healing. The Swedish Edmonds Therapy Pups program began in early 2008 and has been supporting the needs of our patients, visitors, and staff ever since.
All therapy teams at Swedish Edmonds must be registered as a Therapy Team by one of the following accepted agencies.
- Pet Partners
- Reading with Rover (Medical Certification)
- Project Canine
Once you have your certification you will need to meet with the volunteer manager to discuss the possibilities for working in a hospital setting. Not every therapy team is suited to working in a healthcare environment. We will review the following:
- Identifying Stress
- Learning commands for use in the therapy setting
- Practicing around healthcare equipment
- Working with patients
- Approaching patients who may not be feeling well or who are not receptive to a dog visit
- Outlining the specific responsibilities of a handler
- Addressing common staff concerns regarding visiting animal programs
- Learning about infection control
