Sarah E. Hemphill, MD, MPH

I strive to listen to my patients’ concerns, identify their goals, and partner in forming a plan to meet them. I do everything I can to make my patients of all backgrounds and identities feel safe and comfortable. I am most interested in taking care of folks who have fallen through the cracks. In medical school, I focused much of my learning on addiction medicine and its infectious complications, homeless healthcare, care of trans and gender diverse youth, and single-payer advocacy. I believe a radical transformation of our healthcare system is still possible with effective and strategic organizing. As a resident, I can’t wait to continue to fight for more equitable, anti-racist healthcare system, better working conditions for all workers, and a robust public health infrastructure. Swedish First Hill felt like the perfect fit for me, getting the opportunity to gain all the skills I need and center our communities’ needs and values, while supported by an incredible group of co-residents and faculty. My clinical interests include addiction medicine, infectious diseases, adolescent health, trans and gender diverse care (including gender-affirming hormone therapy), reproductive health and justice, and fighting for universal health insurance.
