Ballard Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Programs

Mon - Fri: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Our Approach

Both the Swedish Ballard Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) embrace a trauma-informed environment of care as a preventative step to help stabilize patients in our community. The programs also can be used as a step-down for patients once they are discharged from inpatient care. Treatment modalities are tailored to meet each participant’s needs and utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) principles.

The treatment teams consist of psychiatrists, advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNP), social workers, licensed mental health counselors, occupational therapists, and chaplains. Medication consultation and management is available by psychiatrists and ARNPs during the duration of each program, and both are covered by most insurance plans.

Swedish Ballard Partial Hospitalization Program

Swedish Ballard Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a short-term, intensive day-treatment program for individuals with acute psychiatric needs. Since participants return to the community each evening, its focus is short-term rapid stabilization and building effective coping skills to improve self-management in home settings.

Partial hospitalization allows participants to continue to meet personal responsibilities and maintain independence while receiving intensive treatment. Treatment modalities are tailored to meet each participant’s needs and utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) principles.

Attendance and participation

PHP participants meet Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. They attend 20 hours of treatment per week for around 10-15 program days. There is an opportunity for a family meeting during their enrollment.

Ballard Intensive Outpatient Program

Swedish Ballard Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a more flexible, short-term, intensive day-treatment program for individuals with acute psychiatric needs. Patients in PHP also can step down to IOP as part of their treatment plan.

IOP is still focused on building effective coping skills that improve self-management in home settings. However, it was created in response to our patients that can’t make PHP’s time commitment but still need more care than traditional outpatient services currently provide. Our group therapy model allows patients to feel less alone and witness others overcome similar struggles.

Attendance and participation

IOP participants attend programs 3 days a week from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. as best fits their schedule. They attend a minimum of 9 hours of group therapy per week for around 3 weeks, or as long as clinically necessary.
