Making History with Histotripsy

In January 2024, Swedish First Hill became the first hospital in the Pacific Northwest region to provide a new treatment option for liver cancer called histotripsy. This form of treatment provides hope to patients who are not candidates for surgery or have tried other forms of treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation without success. Additionally, this noninvasive, FDA-approved procedure for patients with liver cancer has minimal side effects; patients have little-to-no down time after the procedure.

Safe and effective care

Studies have shown that histotripsy is a safe and effective addition to treatments currently available for cancer and liver tumors, which include radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery.

Because the innovative histotripsy procedure is noninvasive, it minimizes the risk of infection, bleeding, and other complications. Early clinical trials show a promising success rate, indicating that physicians can precisely target and destroy liver tissue and tumors that cannot be completely removed through surgery. It also brings new hope to patients who cannot tolerate surgery or for whom radiation or chemotherapy is not a viable option.

The benefit of histotripsy is that it can create a very distinct area of treatment. That makes the treatment highly controllable, highly predictable, and more precise. It can achieve the same results as surgery but with less side effects and fewer complications. And when treatments are done in that environment, it makes them safer.

What to expect

Histotripsy works by using targeted ultrasound waves to form microbubbles within the tumor. As the bubbles form and collapse, they cause the mass to break apart, killing tumor cells and leaving the debris to be cleaned up by the immune system.

The robotic-assisted histotripsy procedure is performed and controlled by our specially trained surgical oncologists using sophisticated imaging technology.

Patients receive general anesthesia to minimize movement during the procedure, but it is not painful. Patients typically go home the same day they have the procedure.

Why Choose Us for Histotripsy?

As the first hospital in the Pacific Northwest region to offer histotripsy, Swedish is a destination for patients seeking noninvasive treatment for malignant and benign liver tumors. We know how important family celebrations and special occasions can be. Together let’s finish cancer so you don’t have to miss any of these moments.

We know that every patient is unique. No two patients – or their treatment plans – are alike. This is why we take a highly personalized approach to cancer care, and we always put our patients first. Our expert clinicians work with you to develop a specialized treatment plan that fits your and your family’s needs, because we know this results in the best outcomes.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but access to great cancer care hasn’t always been the same for everyone. At Swedish, we are deeply committed to making sure every patient we treat has access to the best cancer care. We value, respect and support the racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual and spiritual identities of each member of our diverse communities, and we never turn a patient away. Instead, we work harder to make sure every patient is treated equally and with dignity – whoever you are, and wherever you're at.

Swedish cancer research provides options, and hope, for patients seeking advanced procedures and therapies. We’re proud of our long history of pioneering clinical trials, research and evidence-based therapies. We established the first cancer-care center west of the Mississippi. We also have over 90 years of radiation research.

Swedish Cancer Institute physician investigators and research partners are at the leading edge of the clinical trials stage of the research process. Swedish is one of the leading clinical trial sites in the western United States and is actively involved in hundreds of ongoing clinical trials involving most types of cancer. SCI is often the only site in the Pacific Northwest – and sometimes the first in the world – to participate in many clinical trials.

As our patient, you and your loved ones are supported by an entire care team throughout your treatment journey. Our board-certified medical oncologists use the most advanced techniques in your diagnosis and treatment. They work closely with an extensive team that includes nurse navigators, specialists and other caregivers who provide a range of support services – from prevention and education to nutrition, integrative medicine and counseling.
