Making History with Histotripsy

Swedish First Hill is the first hospital in the Pacific Northwest to provide a new treatment option for liver cancer called histotripsy. We’re innovation leaders of this technology, pioneering the technique to target lesions in all segments of the liver. As a result, we’ve performed over 100 histotripsy procedures and treated liver cancer patients on a local, regional and national level.

This form of treatment provides hope to patients who aren’t candidates for surgery or have tried other forms of treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation without success. Additionally, this noninvasive, FDA-approved procedure has minimal side effects; patients have little-to-no down time afterward.

Safe and effective care

Studies have shown that histotripsy is a safe and effective addition to treatments currently available for cancer and liver tumors; this includes radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. Early clinical trials show a promising success rate, indicating that physicians can precisely target and destroy liver tissue and tumors that cannot be completely removed through surgery.

The benefits of histotripsy include:

  • Achieving the same results as surgery with a noninvasive procedure
  • Targeting a very distinct treatment area, making the procedure highly controllable, highly predictable and more precise
  • Fewer side effects
  • Minimizing the risk of infection, bleeding and other complications
  • Offering hope to patients who cannot tolerate surgery or receive radiation or chemotherapy as a viable treatment option

What to expect

Histotripsy works by using targeted ultrasound waves to form microbubbles within the tumor. As the bubbles form and collapse, they cause the mass to break apart and kill tumor cells. The debris left behind is cleaned up by the immune system.

The robotic-assisted histotripsy procedure is performed and controlled by our specially trained surgical oncologists using sophisticated imaging technology.

Patients receive general anesthesia to minimize movement during the procedure, but it isn’t painful. Patients typically go home the same day that they get the procedure.

Why Choose Us for Histotripsy?

As the first hospital in the Pacific Northwest region to offer histotripsy, Swedish is a destination for patients seeking noninvasive treatment for malignant and benign liver tumors. We know how important family celebrations and special occasions can be. Together let’s finish cancer so you don’t have to miss any of these moments.

We know that every patient is unique. No two patients – or their treatment plans – are alike. This is why we take a highly personalized approach to cancer care, and we always put our patients first. Our expert clinicians work with you to develop a specialized treatment plan that fits your and your family’s needs, because we know this results in the best outcomes.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but access to great cancer care hasn’t always been the same for everyone. At Swedish, we are deeply committed to making sure every patient we treat has access to the best cancer care. We value, respect and support the racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual and spiritual identities of each member of our diverse communities, and we never turn a patient away. Instead, we work harder to make sure every patient is treated equally and with dignity – whoever you are, and wherever you're at.

Swedish cancer research provides options, and hope, for patients seeking advanced procedures and therapies. We’re proud of our long history of pioneering clinical trials, research and evidence-based therapies. We established the first cancer-care center west of the Mississippi. We also have over 90 years of radiation research.

Swedish Cancer Institute physician investigators and research partners are at the leading edge of the clinical trials stage of the research process. Swedish is one of the leading clinical trial sites in the western United States and is actively involved in hundreds of ongoing clinical trials involving most types of cancer. SCI is often the only site in the Pacific Northwest – and sometimes the first in the world – to participate in many clinical trials.

As our patient, you and your loved ones are supported by an entire care team throughout your treatment journey. Our board-certified medical oncologists use the most advanced techniques in your diagnosis and treatment. They work closely with an extensive team that includes nurse navigators, specialists and other caregivers who provide a range of support services – from prevention and education to nutrition, integrative medicine and counseling.

How Our Providers Are Impacting Patients

"Histotripsy has minimal side effects. It's more precise than some of the non-invasive treatments that we have, and it reduces the recovery time. Those three things together provide a drastic improvement in therapy. Once again, Swedish is on the cusp of doing things that are very progressive. We have always been that way."
