HIV/AIDS Care
Swedish is the Pacific Northwest's leading provider of quality medical care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Whether in the hospital, in our outpatient treatment center or in an individual's home, we are dedicated to offering the best possible care in an environment that promotes respect and dignity.
The coordination of our services with other private and community resources is a key focus of our program.
HIV/AIDS research studies are conducted regularly at Swedish Medical Center.
While people living with AIDS can be treated on virtually any unit at Swedish, most prefer to come to our specialized HIV/Oncology unit on the 12th Floor Southwest at Swedish First Hill campus. Our 29-bed, acute-care unit includes 11 private rooms. Massage, music therapy and a special pet-therapy program enhance the comfort and well-being of our patients.
On this unit, patients receive care from their primary-care providers and medical consultants with the support of a multidisciplinary team of professionals that includes:
- Case managers
- Nurses
- Nutritionists
- Physical therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Discharge planners
The team has extensive experience in helping patients with the physical and emotional challenges of HIV/AIDS.
Swedish promotes an individual’s independence by providing medical treatment on an outpatient basis in an IV suite at Swedish First Hill. The specialized treatment includes a wide variety of services, such as:
- IV hydration
- IV antibiotics
- Blood transfusions
- Chemotherapy
- Central IV line placement
- Aerosolized pentamidine
- Sputum induction
- Dressing changes
