Diabetes and Nutrition Education
Swedish Medical Center has a team of specialists whose goal is to help people improve their health. Our team of dedicated and compassionate educators will guide and support you with an individualized plan designed to work with you and your lifestyle in order to keep you as healthy as possible.
Whether you have just learned that you have diabetes or if you have lived with it for many years, there is always something new to learn about it. Learning more about diabetes will help you manage it better, and this will lead to you feeling better and enjoying a healthy life. Our team of diabetes educators, all of whom are Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (CDCESs), work with you and your healthcare provider to create an individualized comprehensive education program. The team will guide and support you with a tailored plan designed to work with your lifestyle.
At the Swedish Diabetes Education Center, we’re here to help you learn more about:
- Meal planning and healthy eating practices
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Using insulin and other medications for diabetes
- The newest diabetes technologies, including Continuous Glucose Monitors and insulin pumps
- Exercise
- Stress management and coping skills for living with a chronic condition
- Preventing complications from diabetes
Outside of diabetes, our registered dietitians can provide one-on-one guidance for other conditions that are affected by the foods we eat. Our expert dietitians provide nutrition education and counseling, and work with you to develop achievable goals to make life-long improvements to your health.
Whether you seek nutrition guidance for an existing condition or simply aim to improve your overall health, our dietitians will help you explore opportunities for change, provide evidence-based nutrition advice, and create meaningful plans to support your goals.
Individualized nutrition counseling is provided for a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Weight management
- Diabetes & pre-diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Kidney disease
- Sports nutrition
- Vegetarian, vegan, or other specialized diets
- Elimination diets
- General nutrition & wellness concerns

Before you register for an individual appointment or a class, we ask that you:
- Ask your physician to send a referral to the Diabetes & Nutrition Education Center
- Check with your insurance company about coverage for diabetes education or medical nutrition therapy
Referrals can be submitted in Epic, or they can be faxed to the numbers listed under the Locations tab. When we receive the referral, we will contact you to make an appointment. You can also reach out to us directly to get scheduled.
Our program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
All services are billed to your insurance company. Most commercial insurance plans typically provide some degree of coverage for both diabetes education as well as medical nutrition therapy, but coverage varies. We are also approved by both Medicare and Medicaid for most services.
