Evan Ong, M.D., named Doctor of the Year by Puget Sound Business Journal
Dr. Ong led the way in helping Swedish’s First Hill campus become the first hospital on the West Coast to begin offering a new treatment called histotripsy.
Congratulations to Evan Ong, M.D., surgical oncologist at Providence Swedish, for being named 2024 Doctor of the Year by the Puget Sound Business Journal at their recent Health Care Leadership Awards event.
The annual event – now in its sixth year – honors exceptional leaders who have shaped the health care landscape in the Puget Sound area.
About Dr. Ong
Dr. Ong was recruited to Providence Swedish as a surgical oncologist and hepatobiliary specialist treating a wide range of common, complex and rare pancreas, liver, bile duct, gallbladder and related conditions. He led the way in helping Swedish’s First Hill campus become the first hospital on the West Coast to begin offering a new treatment called histotripsy to people with liver cancer.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved process uses sound waves to create sonic beams that destroy cancer cells with bubble clouds. Histotripsy does not require an incision, has no side effects and minimal recovery time. It is a safe, effective option for people who may not be good candidates for surgery or who have tried other treatments without success.
Dr. Ong began performing histotripsy in October 2023 and, in less than a year, has successfully performed more than 55 cases. Due to Dr. Ong’s early adoption of this leading-edge technology, Providence Swedish has quickly ascended to become one of the top three highest volume centers in the U.S. The two other sites include Providence Mission Hills in California and Cleveland Clinic.
